Help Ben Find An Old Elevator!

Help Ben Find An Old Elevator!

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

My name is Ben Samuel, I am working on a documentary series about Edwardian
engineering that will air on national Geographic in the States and Channel 4
in the UK.

I am very interested in finding any Edwardian (c1900-1915) era Otis Elevator
Company elevators that are still in working order. I am particularly
interested in any that are in the UK, or on New York, Washington or Chicago.
Do you know of any that might fir the bill?

Best wishes,

Ben

American Elevators Indianhead Emblem Sells For $355

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

amercianelevatorsemblem1Being someone who is always on the look out for antique elevator equipment, this recent sale had me realizing that there IS a market for old elevator equipment. I’ve purchased my share of cast turn of the century (1900’s) elevator castings from both Ebay and www.ElevatorGear.com.  Having seen this piece on ebay before I’ve seen it sell for between $35 and $95 but never have I seen it sell for $355! On top of the final sale was the fact that there were 21 bids on it.

So get your old equipment out and look to sell them for free over on elevatorgear.com or on Ebay for a fee. Remember, there is a market for the collectors in the elevator industry!

Geo T McLauthlin Elevator Company Pushbutton Plate?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

reg_662

Can you identify the markings on this plate?  Thanks to some very knowledgeable elevator experts we believe that it might be from the McLauthlin Company in Boston.  The trouble that we have is that we don’t have anything that 100% confirms that it is!

We believe the company originally was named “Geo. T. Mc Lauthlin” from Fulton Road in Boston. Many people say “Laughlin”, maybe because it sounds more familar with the English language. You’ll find some information on Mc Lauthlin in the web including some nice scans from their old catalogues in this post.

If anyone can provide more information please comment below! Thanks!

1910 Otis Freight Elevator For Sale!

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I recently acquired a commercial building with a 1910 Otis freight elevator. It has the original inspection certificate dated 1927 when it went into service and seems in fine shape. It was locked down decades ago and has not been touched since.

The location of this elevator is in Los Angeles California Area and all offers will be considered. If you are interested in purchasing it please contact donaldkain@hotmail.com for more information! What a cool piece of history this is! It’s like it’s own time capsule.

Cool Old Photo Found-Chicago, Reliance Elevator 1912

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

relianceThis photograph was sent to us by a fan of this blog. It’s not every day you run across a random photograph with an Elevator Company Sign in the back ground. Reliance Elevator in Chicago was one of the biggest names in the city.

Enjoy it and perhaps someone who may have more information about Reliance Elevator would like to give a little history on this company in the comments section below.

Dated around 1910-1912 what a great piece of history!

Historic Buildings or Parking Spaces….

Historic Buildings or Parking Spaces….

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

It amazes me that buildings like the Peoples Bank Building in Waynesburgh, PA are found by unique individuals and investors who can comprehend the treasure it holds.  I was lucky enough to find this website with the help of Nessa who took photographs, posted them on Flickr and pointed me to http://peoplesbankwaynesburg.wordpress.com . The Photographs can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/statlerhotel/sets/72157617235958321 which are equally cool.

Isn’t the internet cool! I tell you, better than sliced bread.  Way to go in restoring this classical piece of history! I hope they are able to keep as much of the elevator as possible! What’s crazy is that at one time they were considering razing the building for additional parking space. Thank goodness someone had some common sense!

Photograph Date: 1910.
